Barn is finished

March 1st, 2010

All the repairs are completed. The entire east wall is replaced and some of the welding has been upgraded and strengthened. We’ll have to varnish it, for weather protection. However, the horses have already moved back in and are warm and snug.

The barn is falling! The barn is falling!

February 25th, 2010

Well, okay, not really. But after about 5 years of hard use, it needed repairs something awful. So, here’s some pix of ongoing barn repairs. Hopefully, by this time next week, we’ll have a much improved barn.

Finally, a new sign for our place

February 9th, 2010

I'm really working to market our horses, so I ordered a new sign for the front gate. I haven't put it up yet, here it's just propped up against the truck. Hopefully, it'll make our place easier to find and add a little class, too. Hope you like it.

What, no pancakes???

January 9th, 2010

You would think she’d be thrilled at all this yummy food, but noooo, noticed her annoyed expression. Geez, what a princess! BTW, she isn’t an Arabian, she’s a Pinto Saddlebred.

OMG it’s COLD!

January 8th, 2010

It’s below freezing, which is amazing here in South Texas. I chipped ice out of the horses water and my hands got so cold, they hurt when they finally warmed up. Where, oh, WHERE are my riding gloves?????

A colt’s rite of passage

Lightfoot Foxtrot

Lightfoot Foxtrot

Lightfoot Foxtrot (WMA Lightfoot +// x Belesema Mariah) is finding out it’s time to grow up. He’s learning trailering skills, and alas, his first trailer trip is to the vet for gelding. I feel strongly that there are too many stallions and that the entire horse industry would benefit if more owners would geld their horses. It does them no harm, and they are healthier and happier for it. And they heal more quickly if it is done when colts are young. At 9 months, our little fellow is definitely ready.

A beautiful day, what a shame

November 6th, 2009

Man, I’d love to be out riding right now. The sun is shining, it’s just right…but. I have one day off this week. The house is filthy, I got no groceries, no clean clothes…damn. Guess what I’m NOT doing today? Sigh.

A trip to the equine dentist, BWHAHA

November 3rd, 2009

Mariah was long overdue for having her teeth floated, but I finally found the time and we took her and her 6 month old foal to the DVM to have her dental work done. I was going to show you a picture of the gizmo they use to keep her mouth open but thought that might be a little gruesome. Here is a shot of her heavily sedated. They use a power grinder to smooth out the sharp edges of her teeth and give her a more balanced bite. It doesn’t hurt but it’s noisy and horses deal with it better if they are sedated. Her foal also got a checkup and a coggins test.

Arabian Nationals part three

October 26th, 2009

Okay, this is going to be short, I returned home last night and I’m still recovering from the drive. And I have a lousy internet connection and uploading pix seems to be a problem. Suffice it to say, attending Arabian Nationals was truly an experience not to be missed. Stunning horses, brilliant riders and lots of vendors. However, you can sense the effect of the recession. Several vendors who normally attend looked like they took a pass this year. And I’ve heard, although I didn’t witness this personally, that many classes were cancelled. I think A shows are going to experience a serious slowdown for awhile. But I think that’s okay, folks can concentrate on breeding and training and the show scene will be even better for having had a short hiatus.

Arabian Nationals part deux

October 26th, 2009

Wow. Arabian Nationals is every bit as amazing as everyone promised it would be. The picture is some of the art work available at Nationals. Gorgeous stuff, but way outta my price range. As you might expect, the horses were stunning and top caliber and all the riders were incredibly skilled. If anybody had show nerves, it didn’t show, everyone looked calm and focused. I’ll upload more pictures and new tomorrow. Or Monday, ’cause I’ve got to head for home tomorrow and it’s a 9 hour drive.
