HOT HOT HOT

June 15th, 2009

OMG, it’s hot out there! The grass is brown, the alsphalt is baking, the poor horses have salt stains on their coats from constant sweating. This is a good time to remind everyone to respect Mother Nature and be safe. Don’t overheat while riding, drink plenty of fluids and make sure your horse has plenty of cool fresh water.

Be safe, everyone.

When is it too many horses?

June 13th, 2009

While browsing the horse-for-sale ads, I often come across the line “too many horses, not enough time..” I used to have difficulty with this idea. How could one possibly have too many of these gorgeous creatures?

I no longer have difficulty understanding it. Too many horses is when they seriously threaten your checkbook balance. Too many horses is when you have to stagger outside to treat them for fly infestation or injuries, and you are very tired already. Too many horses is when it stops being fun, and becomes an endless round of chores. Too many horses is when you are sick of driving to the vet and no longer enjoy chatting with him about horsey health. Too many horses is when you would really rather sit and read. Or take a trip. Or pursue your other hobbies.

Several of my beautiful horses are for sale. I will miss them (of course, with the economy the way it is, it’ll be awhile) but honestly, I’ll be glad to rest and enjoy the few that are left. And I really will enjoy them, because I’ll have the time to do so.

Just a simple trip to the vet (bwaahahaha)

June 5th, 2009

There is no such thing as a simple trip to the vet. In this particular case, we were taking our 5 year old broodmare and her new foal to the vet because we suspected the mare had fly larvae in her eyes.

Of course, she loaded perfectly but the foal kept running around the trailer. Finally, after much effort, we got him in. While this was going on, a thunderstorm brewed up. (In Texas, thunderstorms brew up faster than a cup of tea in the microwave!) Then we got caught behind a Sunday driver who looked like he knew Custer personally. Finally, we arrived. Fortunately, both mare and foal got a clean bill of health. We drove home and just, and I mean just beat the incoming storm. Whew!

Brandy new blog, posts and site

May 30th, 2009

Hello, everyone. After nearly 5 years of a web site, I decided it was high time to move on and create a blog for Lazy K Arabians. This is a brand new undertaking, so bear with me. As time permits, I’ll add photos and updates.
